Norton AntiVirus 2010-Pc review

Norton AntiVirus 2010-Pc review

NAV2010 successfully scanned system in around a minute, which by means of comparison is only around 10% faster than the previous version of Norton 360, but significantly quicker than most other rivals. As Norton gets used to your system however, these times are reduced, and in fact we very impressed to see this drop to just 10 seconds during subsequent scans.
Part of the reason for this and one of the biggest improvements to this new version comes in the form of Quorum
and the Norton Insight tools. The former represents a major breakthrough in reputation-based security and helps the software adopt a more cautious approach to managing "unknown" files, as well as offering the sort of scan-time improvements illustrated above.

Quorum uses reputation inform
ation to help guard against new and unknown threats and by building a database of Norton Community users it can help predict how safe a file is and therefore anticipate the arrival of potentially harmful data. It’s also possible to view the trust level, resource usage and discovery date of everything running on your system, and by selecting a file you’re provided with more details on its origins and activity.
System Insight is anothe
r useful tool and provides an overview of recent activity including downloads, scans, installed programs and threat detections to help more advanced users view and interpret recent activity and the correlation between this information, impact on performance and the emergence of threats. It’s also possible to view CPU and memory performance graphs and identify which programs are responsible for highest usage, allowing users to detect and diagnose resource-hogs and potential reasons for reduced performance.
Admittedly these tools may not appeal to all users but Norton does a great job of making this wealth of information as accessible and easy to interpret as possible, and those who do appreciate having the tools available to do a bit
of detective work will find them invaluable.

Norton AntiVirus 2010 is an excellent progression for the series, offering performance improvements, peace of mind and being very easy to use. The only thing that has prevented it from getting a higher score here is the price. At £39.99 it costs around the same as more comprehensive security suites on offer from rivals, and most would consider this a lot to pay for an "antivirus-only" product.
In comparison to Norton Internet Security 2010, which is only £10 more, NAV omits a firewall, identity protection, anti-spam and secur
ity for home and wireless networking, so in this light we’d be inclined to recommend spending a bit extra on the more comprehensive suite, which also offers the benefits of all of these new features.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 receives AV-Comparatives' top award

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces that Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 successfully passed rigorous testing by the esteemed independent Austrian organization AV-Comparatives and received a glowing appraisal.

During September 2009, experts from AV-Comparatives compared 16 of the most popular malware solutions and reported on their findings. The company checked the efficacy of each solution against 10 well-known samples of malware including NetSky, RJump, Rustock and ZBot. These samples were carefully chosen in order to push each antivirus solution to its limits, thus revealing the full capabilities of each product.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 detected and removed all the malware programs from the infected computer, thereby earning itself AV-Comparatives' highest accolade, Advanced+.

Kaspersky Lab's new range of personal products, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 and Kaspersky Internet Security 2010, are at the cutting-edge of information security. For example, Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 comes complete with the following features built- in: an advanced applications control technology known as HIPS that assigns a risk rating to previously unknown malware; the innovative Kaspersky Security Network distribution system; and the unique Safe Run virtualization technology that provides a safe environment in which to run suspect applications.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 includes effective anti-malware technologies that are trusted by millions the world over.

AVG goes toe to toe with MS in consumer security fight.

AVG is putting an emphasis on increased speed with a revamp of its free and paid for security suites.

The latest revamp - AVG 9.0 - boasts 50 per cent faster speed and increased ease of use. Improvements in speed have been achieved by skipping the scan of files already marked as safe in future scans unless the file structure changes. The approach also offers claimed improvements of ten to 15 per cent for boot times and memory usage, respectively.

The firewall module in AVG 9.0 has also been redesigned to be less intrusive (ie fewer 'Do you want to allow this application online' questions) alongside tighter integration with the anti-malware scanner that forms the core of the product. This anti-malware scanner makes greater use of behaviour-based, cloud-based and white-listing technologies.

AVG has partnered with Intersections to offer identity theft recovery services, but this offer is available only to US users.

Rather unfortunately for those who remember the John Major government of the mid 1990s in the UK, AVG describes all this as going "back to basics". There's no word on any security equivalent of a cones hotline.

Paid versions of AVG 9.0 paid were available from Monday with a one-year, one-seat license for AVG Anti-Virus 9.0 starting at £27.99 ($44.50) in the UK. In continental Europe the price is €33.95. But in the US the price starts at just $34.99, around $10 less and with the addition of identity theft recovery services to boot.

For AVG Internet Security the pricing is £39.99 ($63.70) inc VAT, €52.95 inc VAT in Europe and $54.99 in the US (excluding sales tax).

The difference in pricing is less than we first reported but again significant, especially when the US-only availability of ID protection is factored into the equation.

AVG Free 9.0 will be available mid-October. Details of the features are being held back until then, but expect to see a cut-down product based on the same engine but without a firewall and other bells and whistles. Based on past form, AVG free will offer an anti-malware scanner alongside LinkScanner safe search technology.
